The Ukrainian ghost towns:
what to see in Chernobyl and Pripyat

The accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant occurred in April of 1986, after which a 30-kilometer zone around the accident site was closed for free access. Visitors to Chernobyl and Pripyat have been admitted since 1995; today any adult can visit these towns with a tour. We tell you which interesting locations you will see during the visit.
Important: It is impossible to get into Chernobyl independently. You should join an official tour, which is organized by licensed Ukrainian tour operators.
Checkpoint "Dityatki"

It is prohibited to stay in the exclusion zone without documents and accompanying persons. At the checkpoint "Dityatki", your passport will be checked, and you will be instructed on how to behave during the tour.
Village of Zalesye
Surviving buildings in the Village of Zalesye
Only 15 minutes away from Chernobyl, there is the abandoned Village of Zalesye. Destroyed buildings are hidden among trees, but among the ruins one can find also surviving houses. Before the catastrophe at the Chernobyl NPP, 3,000 people lived here.
The Town of Chernobyl
The Town of Chernobyl
Before the accident, the population of Chernobyl was 13,000 people; after the evacuation, only employees of enterprises in the Exclusion Zone live here. Here is the Memorial Complex "Star Wormwood": an alley of abandoned villages with signs of those empty population centers, the monument "The Trumpeting Angel", the Museum of Chernobyl, and a monument to first responders to the Chernobyl NPP accident. Also, during the walk, you will see machinery and robots used during the accident response.
Red Forest
Red Forest – a site of the most powerful radioactive release from the explosion at the Chernobyl NPP
After the explosion at Unit 4, the largest share of radioactive dust emission was taken by 10 km2 of the forest adjacent to the Chernobyl NPP. The trees absorbed a high dose of radiation, died and acquired brown-red color. During the decontamination work, the forest was destroyed by bulldozers and buried in the ground. Now young trees grow there, but the soil and moss are still contaminated.
Stele "Pripyat"

The stele "Pripyat" is a popular place among photographers. Here you can often spot a fox, named Semyon: it goes out to visitors to enjoy refreshments.
The Town of Pripyat
The Town of Pripyat
Among the trees and thick bushes, the abandoned Town of Pripyat is hidden. Before the accident, the personnel of the Chernobyl NPP lived here. During the evacuation, the entire population left the town – 47,500 people. Due to the environment, empty buildings have been gradually falling into disrepair, therefore it is not recommended to enter them. During the tour, you will see the famous Ferris wheel, abandoned houses, a kindergarten and a school, a large Olympic pool, the cinema Prometheus, a hithe with a flooded quay, the Polesie Hotel, and many other buildings that once formed the well-developed infrastructure of a growing nuclear town.
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

On the observation platform near the shutdown nuclear power plant, you will see the "Shelter-2" arch, pushed onto the reactor building and a memorial at the administrative building of the Chernobyl NPP. At the site of the memorial, in 1986, there was a parking lot, where thousands of people arrived to decontaminate the nuclear power plant and build the Sarcophagus to cover the reactor.
The secret facility Chernobyl-2
The secret facility Chernobyl-2
A few kilometers away from the Chernobyl NPP, there is a top-secret military facility - the radar "Duga-1". It was built during the Cold War to monitor launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles. During the tour, you will see not only its giant antennas, but also the town of Chernobyl-2, which ensures their operability.
